Shirodhara
Ayurveda, pronounced eye-yur-vae-duh, is a 5,000-year-old Hindi form of medicine. Unlike our Americanized form of medication, largely dependent on supplements and injections to cure impurities, the Ayurvedic system aims to “balance the body” through diet, herbal treatment, yogic breathing, and massage therapy.
Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow).
Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière’s disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties. Studies report that Ayurvedic Shirodhara is a safe option to improve sleep quality among people who have sleep problems
Shirodhara is also effective in treating mental conditions such as anxiety, and mental stress. The calming effect produced by Shirodhara is similar to that obtained with meditation.
Shirodhara may begin with a full body massage known as Abhyangam. Abhayangam is a popular body massage in Ayurveda and is effective in conditioning the body. Shirodhara is thought to work by relaxing the hypothalamus in the brain. It can also normalize the functions of hormones that regulate sleep and emotions
The benefits of Shirodhara on the mind, body and soul are numerous, being an excellent treatment to promote blood circulation, reduce stress, restore damaged nerves, improve memory and cognitive function.
- Deep Relaxation:
- Reduced stress and improves sleep
- Restore hair vitality
- Repair nerve degeneration
Shirodhara should be avoided if a woman is in her third trimester of pregnancy and for those with a rash or sunburn on the forehead or scalp.
With countless benefits for the mind, body, and spirit, it is little wonder that Shirodhara is one of our most in-demand therapies!
